Airport International Group Celebrates Completion of Second Phase of QAIA’s New Terminal Project

Wednesday, September 7, 2016

Amman, September 2016 - Under the patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II, Airport International Group (AIG) – a consortium that harnesses the airport management and construction expertise of regional and international partners to rehabilitate, expand and operate Queen Alia International Airport (QAIA) – celebrated yet another proud national accomplishment with the inauguration of the second phase of QAIA’s New Terminal Project. The inauguration ceremony, which took place on Monday 5 September, 2016, at one of the Airport’s newly-expanded piers, was carried out in the presence of H.E. Prime Minister, Hani Al-Mulki; H.E. Minister of Transport, Yahya Kasabi; Airport International Group Chairman, Faras Al Ramahi; a group of ministers, senators and ambassadors; shareholders, top executives from aviation companies and local community organizations; as well as a host of local and regional media entities.

Valued at USD 214 million, the second phase of QAIA’s New Terminal Project adds 43,513 square-meters to the Airport’s total area, raising its annual passenger capacity from the current nine million to up to 12 million passengers, with future plans to increase the capacity even further to 16 million passengers per year. As a result of the expansion, the total number of gates in operation at QAIA has nearly doubled, increasing from 13 to 25 active gates, of which eight are remote gates and 17 are contact gates. The additional nine contact gates are operated from two Fixed Link Bridges, as well as four new Super Fixed Link Bridges, two of which can accommodate the world’s largest airplane, the Airbus A380.

The second expansion’s cutting-edge facilities also include two new business lounges, two new Duty-Free areas and four new prayer rooms, as well as larger monitors, additional charging stations and an upgraded Wi-Fi system. Ensuring that QAIA’s short transit processes and walking distances are maintained despite its increased area, 10 travelators, 24 escalators and 18 lifts have also been installed in the expansion, allowing passengers to continue to make their way quickly and comfortably across the Airport.

Commenting on the inauguration of the second phase of QAIA’s New Terminal project, H.E. Kasabi, stated, “In an unstable region, the Almighty has distinguished the hospitable nation of Jordan through not only the blessings of safety and security, but also through its Hashemite leadership, which is steadfast in ensuring the comfort of its people in all areas and industries. These blessing have enabled Jordan to stand, as envisioned by His Majesty King Abdullah II, as a bulwark against predators and the greedy, and as a pioneer among its brother nations and friends. The attendance and blessed patronage of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II of this ceremony is further confirmation of the Hashemite leadership’s relentless support of infrastructure development projects across industries, particularly those within the aviation sector. These efforts aim to realize the royal vision of His Majesty King Abdullah II, which encompasses providing the highest levels of service to the people of Jordan as well as to the guests who pass through QAIA throughout their travels across the Kingdom.”

In turn, Al Ramahi said, “Witnessing the tremendous progress that QAIA has made since the New Terminal’s opening just three years ago has been truly rewarding. As we begin another chapter in the Airport’s successful journey, which has been fostered by its leading world-renowned public-private partnership with the Government of Jordan, we look forward to continuing to deliver top-notch services to citizens and visitors alike. The much-anticipated completion of QAIA’s second expansion phase is an extraordinary milestone, which was made possible thanks to the dedication, hard work and passion of our employees at Airport International Group and QAIA, as well as the unwavering support of the Government of Jordan, our shareholders and our partners.”

Since embarking on a new era with the inauguration of its New Terminal in March 2013 by His Majesty King Abdullah II ibn Al Hussein, QAIA has marked many proud achievements, from hitting new passenger traffic milestones with record-breaking months in both 2015 and 2016, to growing its airline network, to gaining significant ground in the rankings of the Airport Council International’s (ACI) Airport Service Quality (ASQ) Survey, the world’s leading airport passenger satisfaction benchmark program. QAIA further bolstered its position as Jordan’s prime gateway to the world when it received, for the second consecutive year, first place in the category of ‘Best Airport by Region: Middle East’ based on its performance in the 2014 and 2015 ACI ASQ Surveys, besides topping the ‘Best Improvement by Region: Middle East’ category based on its 2014 performance.
